The University of Iowa has decided to highlight some of its biggest stock investments, including ExxonMobil, Lockheed Martin, Goldman Sachs, and Boeing on banners throughout Iowa City.
One banner states, "Dare to fund drone bombing." Other notable signs include: "Dare to fund climate change," "Dare to fund oil wars," and "Dare to fund Wall Street."
The lead administrator of this project was quoted saying, "I think this will really help us be more forthright and honest with our community stakeholders. Everyone should know where we place our, and your [chuckles], money." Other administrators weren't so big on the idea. "I don't talk to the press when the issue is a global one."
But some were able to connect the dots: "Over the last eight years, the U.S. has built a surveillance and military apparatus so staggeringly large and centralized that only a saintly philosopher-king could ever hope to wield it ethically. Through both financial, cultural, and labor contributions, we're proud to be a key part of that legacy."
